Being informed about global issues is incredibly important. Empathy is a vital part of society because it is necessary for fostering peace and catalyzing positive change. While empathy is currently on the decline, we as engineers have the power to reverse that trend through utilizing new technologies like virtual reality and working with tried and true physiological principles associated with a shared identity. That is what we aimed to do with Empathy Box, creating a space flooded with compassion. Immersing the user in a Syrian camp or in the polar caps creates a first-person narrative where the client is the protagonist. In this position, they live through the story, deeply appreciating what it has to convey. In a fraction of a second, they are in South Sudan listening from one of the locals about their water crisis. With another click, they can see the ice melting in the polar caps. It is all connected. Unified, inside them. If we can build bridges of empathy as opposed to barriers from one group to another, maybe we can make the world a better, or at a very minimum, a more empathetic place.
