Film Production company for Nelly Queen, The Life and Times of Jose SarriaThe film celebrates the social, cultural and political legacy of Jose Sarria (1922-2013), the world's first openly gay man to run for public office in 1961. At the intersection of politics and camp, Nelly Queen reveals an intimate portrait of a drag performer who, during the 1950s and early 1960s, brazenly stood up (in red heels) to corrupt San Francisco police and undercover officers; litigated anti-gay city ordinances; and founded the nation's largest gay nonprofit. When San Francisco politicians threatened to shut down the gay bars, in 1961, Sarria ran as an openly gay candidate for City Supervisor, 11 years before Harvey Milk. Thirty years later, a writer from Iowa befriends the San Franciscan activist and begins to document his milestone achievements over a period of 23 years. The writer/filmmaker uncovers the activist's strategic vision of not only politicizing the LGBT community, but bringing the gay and straight community together through politics, performance and philanthropy.
