It proposes a unique bond between photojournalists and their audience, and in the process aims to create a new financial model for photojournalism in the 21st century. Emphas.is launches at the beginning of 2011. How will this work?Through crowd funding, but with a difference. Crowd funding has already proven successful in other areas, and we believe photojournalism has a large and enthusiastic following that would be willing to contribute financially when given the right incentive. Emphas.is offers this incentive in the form of exclusive access to top photojournalists carefully selected by a board of reviewers composed of industry professionals. Why will this work?Photojournalism has a huge and dedicated following. In 2009, no less than 2.4 million people in 46 countries visited the World Press Photo exhibition. Lensblog, the photojournalism blog by the New York Times has more than 750,000 unique visitors a month. The award-winning photojournalist James Nachtwey has 26,401 Facebook fans and counting. Also, digital technology has spawned a whole new generation of amateur photographers who we believe are eager to learn from the professionals, and who would be willing to pay a small fee for the privilege. But photography enthusiasts are only part of Emphas.is' potential reach; people who care about the issues addressed by a photojournalist's work are another untapped audience.Who is behind Emphas.is?Emphas.is is the brainchild of photo editor Tina Ahrens and photojournalist Karim Ben Khelifa.
