2020 was an especially difficult year for our family. On September 7, we suffered a devastating loss. Our 19 year old son, Ian, inexplicably took his own life.In the months that have passed, we have been uplifted by the many stories from his friends and teammates who told us how he reached out to them if he saw them struggling, and how he always encouraged them when they were down. He had a genuine concern for those around him and did his best to make sure they knew he was there to talk, to listen and to support them. At his funeral, my brother gave a beautiful eulogy to Ian, and in it he said, "Ian made us better by knowing him. That was his greatest superpower. So be better. Make his memory matter." This call to action became our rallying cry. We began to focus our energy on being better, in an effort to carry on Ian's legacy of helping others.In June of 2021 we founded Be Better;, a non-profit organization dedicated to helping teens, adolescents and their families bridge the gaps in our mental health system and get the help they need. Our mission is to empower teens, young adults, and their support network to prevent suicides and achieve lifelong mental wellness. Over the past 9 months, we've begun offering support groups for teens and young adults struggling with depression, anxiety and suicidal ideation. We also offer support groups for the families and support networks of those who are struggling, and we recently began offering support groups for those who've lost a loved one to suicide. But we're only just beginning.In January we were awarded a grant from the Community Foundation of Holland/Zeeland to develop an education series for teens, adolescents and their support networks that gives detailed insights into mental illness diagnosis, navigating the mental health system, understanding what mental wellness looks like, and how to help a loved one who is struggling.
