Unexplained cardiac death (UCD) occurs as a result of a sudden cardiac arrest, which has a mortality rate of 90%, killing more than 2000 Australians under 50 each year. This makes it one of the leading causes of death, on par with death rates due to suicide for Australians under 50. It is many more than the number of deaths from road traffic accidents or cancer for this demographic. In many cases death is instantaneous, with only 25% of people making it to a hospital. UCD is a death due to a heart cause in which the victim was seemingly well and in which the cardiac arrest was completely unexpected. The causes of UCD under 50 are largely unknown and there are no accurate screening tests that can predict those at high risk of UCD. It has received almost no government or philanthropic funding to date. EndUCD was created in 2017, following the tragic death of Captain Ross Dennerstein in 2016 due to UCD. It was formed to provide a voice for people affected by UCD under 50 and to raise awareness and funding that will enable research to explain the unknown and end UCD.
