Hospital & Health Care - Toronto, Ontario, Canada
EPPHAM (pronounced ‘Ep-Fam') focuses on improving public health and global well-being through the initiation of civil dialogue. Civil dialogue is characteristic of society's progression and the modern values have been molded by diverse voices which shape discourse. Formed in Toronto, the platform aims to bring often opposing voices under one roof to hold conversations on contentious issues. Encouraging public participation, tolerance to contrary views and deliberation of the status quo, the motto serves to further the agenda of societal good emerging through cooperation. The goal is not to hold strictly academic but practical conversations, which take into account viewpoints from all walks of life. This means that discussions are not just backed up by facts, but also encompasses the human experience. We aim to paint a comprehensive picture of each topic by involving the perspectives of public health researchers, physicians, policy specialists, environmental bodies, advertising and advocacy groups. This will allow attendees to obtain a broad policy-associated, social and health-adhering explanation regarding a given topic. With the help of the UTSU (University of Toronto Students' Union) and HIMMS, a non-profit operating as a global advisor and thought leader in improving the health ecosystem through information and technology, we are hosting our very first event. What makes us different?1. Our approach is unconventional. We highlight current research, policy briefs, media releases, patient experiences and general perceptions through panel discussions, debates and virtual seminars. This helps the audience gain a holistic view of the spoken topic.2. We do not aim at an entirely academic audience. We want this forum to reach all parts of society, especially people who are not generally drawn to these conversations.3. We try to include as many opinions on a topic. While this often comes with criticism, it is also necessary to shape informed opinions.
