ERCO Worldwide has a 110 year history of producing chemicals and a long history of supplying environmentally preferred chlorine dioxide technology to the pulp and paper industry. ERCO Worldwides chloralkali business serves a variety of industries including municipal and industrial water treatment, food processing, fertilizers, agricultural intermediates, and oil and gas. ERCO Worldwide is the second largest producer of sodium chlorate in the world. It has the worlds largest installed base of modern chlorine dioxide generators and related technology and is the third largest producer of potassium products in North America The worldwide growth of sodium chlorate has been driven by the need to reduce/eliminate potential formation of dioxins and furans in the pulp bleaching process. The pulp and paper industry's need to adopt ECF technology, based on chlorine dioxide replacing chlorine in the pulp bleaching process, has resulted in significant growth in demand for sodium chlorate in North America and worldwide. The adoption of chlorine dioxide as an environmentally preferable municipal drinking water disinfection technology is expected to similiarly result in strong growth in demand for sodium chlorite.
