ESANI A/S is Greenland's new national waste management company. It was established on 1 February 2019 and consists of a director and a board, whose members come from all of the participating municipalities. The main aim of ESANI A/S is to create solutions for the handling of all forms of waste in Greenland. This includes the building of two new incineration plants and 2-3 waste oil facilities. At the same time, a collection system will be established, where combustible waste can be shipped to Sisimiut and Nuuk. Other types of waste will be sent for processing to other locations in Greenland or abroad. The two new incineration plants will be located in Sisimiut and Nuuk and the waste oil facilities are planned to be located in Qarqortoq, Aasiaat and Maniitsoq. The new incineration plants will be able to incinerate approximately 53 tonnes of waste every 24 hours. In comparison, the existing incineration plant located in Nuuk can incinerate approximately 40 tonnes of waste every 24 hours.ESANI - what does the name mean?ESANI is an abbreviation created from five Greenlandic words that describe what ESANI does.E – Eqqaavillerineq/WasteS – Sulissoqarneq/ResourcesA – Atoqqineq/RecyclingN – Nukissiuuteqarnermilli/EnergyI – Ingerltseqatiffik/company
