The Chair was created in 2007 when multinational firms in Europe were discovering diversity and beginning to think about how it affected them and also how they could impact diversity issues. L'Oréal has been a sponsor of the Chair from its inception in 2007. There are three approaches that firms have taken.1. Diversity as corporate social responsibility2. Diversity as equal opportunities3.Diversity as a business case. All three perspectives are legitimate and not exclusive, but we find that firms adopting the business case for diversity are the most effective in also promoting inclusion. This Chair promotes the business case for diversity. The Chair recruits around 25 students each year to work on diversity and inclusion projects, and to produce research and pedagogical content. In the first ten years, we have published 4 books and have developed a Coursera MOOC on Diversity and Inclusion in the Workplace. Our research projects focus on three aspects of diversity and inclusion:1. Diversity can make us smarter through cognitive complexity,2. Diversity can be a source of innovation, and3. Diversity generates performance for individuals and firms.
