Legal Services - Newark, New Jersey, United States
The Essex County Legal Aid Association (ECLAA) provides free immediate legal advice on civil law matters (focusing largely on landlord/tenant matters, as well as consumer finance matters), preparing pro se legal paperwork so that clients can proceed in court themselves, negotiating with opposing counsel when possible, and (if a tenant client is incapable of representing her interests pro se) representing that client in Landlord-Tenant court and/or hearings. If a client needs other help, we will make referrals to other nonprofit organizations and government agencies who we believe can assist these clients. DURING THE COVID-19 PUBLIC HEALTH CRISIS, OUR OFFICE IS CLOSED, SO LOW-INCOME RESIDENTS OF ESSEX COUNTY SHOULD CALL 973-622-0063 FOR FREE LEGAL HELP FROM AN ECLAA STAFF ATTORNEY WORKING REMOTELY. PLEASE CALL THAT NUMBER OR E-MAIL: HELP@eclaanj.orgNORMALLY, ECLAA performs its emergency services on-site, in the courthouse -- the Essex County (NJ) Hall of Records at 465 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard in Newark. From Room 118, we are like a legal emergency room, physically located where crises related to the absence of legal help are likely to be most stressful for low-income residents of Newark and all other Essex County communities. We perform a form of triage similar to an emergency room, with the goal of providing legal guidance, assurance, and/or a referral to each low-income person who knocks on our door. Every one of our eligible walk-in clients receives immediate emergency legal advice, legal paperwork preparation, and counseling from our legal staff. ECLAA's free legal services are available to qualified low-income residents of Essex County who need emergency help and may have even arrived in court unaware of legal support services available to them. We treat clients with candor and respect. Each client is helped one-on-one in confidence. In 2019, we helped 1,080 clients heading households of 2.945 people, including 1,095 children.
