Individual & Family Services - Des Moines, Iowa, United States
EMBARC, Ethnic Minorities of Burma Advocacy and Resource Center, was founded on the belief that refugees deserve opportunities to pursue meaningful lives. Since 2011, our reach has expanded from Burmese groups to includeCongolese, Eritrean, and Syrian populations. As Iowa's first and only refugee-led social service organization, EMBARC provides the support and resources refugees truly need. EMBARC removes the barriers refugees face by training the trainers within different communities and teaching linguistically appropriate materials. This allows refugees access to educational and health care programs, as well as housing, food, and job opportunities. It's all about building stronger communities, which in turn builds a stronger Iowa.We believe that in order to help a community, the individuals within must feel empowered to help themselves. As the collective voice of different ethnic groups from Burma, EMBARC strives to work together to address shared issues and uplift all refugee communities. Our programs:• Youth and Family "Train the Trainers" Navigator Program• Elementary After-School Literacy Program• Immediate Needs Walk-in Clinic• Adult ESL Classes with Free Childcare• Interpretation Services• 1:1 Mentoring and Tutoring Program• Community Gardening Project
