Music - Etobicoke, ON, CA
Founded in 1982, ESM is recognized as one of the oldest and finest Suzuki programs in Canada. We offer instruction in violin, viola and cello, following the philosophy of Talent Education developed by Shinichi Suzuki, based on the belief that every child can learn. All students in our instrumental core program receive both a private lesson once a week and a group class once a week. Classes for older students include instruction in reading skills and ensemble playing. Group classes play an important role in social and peer motivation providing a setting where children can share their musical experience with other children. School-wide concerts occur in the fall and spring and solo recitals occur in early June. We hold book recitals several times a year for those students who have completed a level of their studies. Community recital opportunities and an annual workshop with guest teachers are also part of our program. We offer a pre-instrumental class for babies and toddlers from birth to 3 years and their caregivers. This class uses a mixture of songs and rhymes, action songs and games, simple instruments, and Suzuki related material to introduce children to basic musical concepts and teach skills that prepare children to begin the instrumental program. There has been a great deal of recent research demonstrating the cognitive benefits of early music studies. We believe that music lessons also develop a child's sensitivity, self-discipline, and social skills. As Suzuki educators, we also believe in "excellence from the start". Although it is not our goal to develop professional musicians, we believe that building skills correctly step by step gives the child the tools they need to be able to play beautifully and to use their music any way they wish in the future.
