Over 175,000 volunteer VHTs currently provide health education for communities across Uganda, contributing to improvements in maternal and newborn care, hygiene, nutrition, access to family planning and reductions in malaria and diarrhea. However, VHTs rarely are provided with refresher trainings, operate in isolation of each other, receive no financial compensation and lack access to updated health information. The eVHT smartphone application will train, incentivize and connect Village Health Team workers (VHTs) to provide improved health education. eVHT will use a profit-sharing model to provide small financial incentivizes for VHTs who complete health training modules. The training modules will be based on updated health information from the Ugandan Ministry of Health implementation partners and will utilize past solutions developed by VHTs themselves. The application will be introduced to users through collaboration with these partners and will provide a platform for group communication. For non-smartphone users, eVHT will provide pre-scheduled SMS messages with health education tips and updates. The mobile-based technology offers low-cost scale up, potentially allowing for future expansion that could help Uganda reach its Sustainable Development Goal.
