FARMM is the McGill University School of Architecture research hub. FARMM was founded by Director Michael Jemtrud in 2008 with over a million dollars in funding from the Canadian Foundation for Innovation to explore collaborative design utilizing advanced technologies in computation and networking. FARMM's non-hierarchical umbrella organization aims to unite researchers and students from within the School of Architecture with academic and professional researchers from around the world. FARMM houses state of the art networking, simulation & imaging, and fabrication infrastructure thus providing a flexible platform upon which applied research as well as emerging technologies can be explored and developed. The FARMM community is interested in an interdisciplinary research approach that explores the cultural role, philosophical implications, and creative or speculative capacities of new technologies within design and design-related fields. FARMM seeks to develop, frame, and understand innovative approaches to design and to promote the adoption and use of new technologies for design in an ethical and thoughtful manner.
