The Family Advocacy Movement was founded in January 2009, in the wake of Nebraska's "safe haven" period, when the public became aware of the void between families' need for intensive mental-health services for severely ill children and the state's debilitating approach to these situations.Families also began speaking out more about the need to bring change to the child welfare/child protection systems, which include the Department of Health & Human Services (caseworkers, contractors, etc...), policy makers, law enforcement, the judicial system (prosecutors, defense attorneys, GALs, and judges), the medical community, the mental health community, and the "foster-care industrial complex." Our membership is made up primarily of families who are, or have been, unwillingly caught up in the over-powerful, unaccountable child-protection system that too often spends a lot of tax dollars needlessly traumatizing children, violating fundamental rights of parents, and leaving families irreparably broken.Although the majority of our members are in the founding state of Nebraska, FAM offers communication tools to families and advocates for all 50 states through our website.Visit FamilyAdvocacyMovement.com to learn more and/or to register to be a member in your own state. Share your story, contribute to discussions, find and offer support, and join the movement to make CPS system more transparent and accountable to the public - for the well-being of children and their families.
