Social Services - Des Moines, IA, US
In 2015, a team of Des Moines-area dedicated volunteers, seeking a world without cancer, came together to establish a local 5K Walk/Run. Our goal was to provide awareness and financial support for patients and families impacted by blood cancer. Since our inception and with the help of our fantastic volunteers, supporters and businesses, our organization has experienced tremendous demand from the cancer community. To match the growing needs, in 2020 our organization determined it was time to expand!Today, Family Cancer Network (FCN) is a growing nonprofit organization with the primary focus of helping patients and families coping with blood and pediatric cancer. There are numerous cancer-related, non-profit organizations doing significant work in terms of education and research. But FCN noticed a major gap when it came to assisting families with the unexpected financial burdens of a cancer diagnosis. Cancer treatments are costly in a multitude of ways outside of medical bills; mortgages or rent, gas, hotel fees and groceries are just a few of the costs that become even more burdensome with a cancer diagnosis. Many patients and their family members often must stop working in order to get the treatment necessary for themselves or for their loved ones. FCN calls this additional burden the "collateral damage" of blood and pediatric cancer treatments, and it has become the mission of our organization to provide relief by giving grants directly to families in need.
