Farming - Oakland, California, United States
Farm-X is a social venture that intends to introduce cities to a new building type: vertical farms that serve as commercially-viable urban farms, sources of new employment, and facilities used to further community benefit activities in lower-income neighborhoods. We understand urban farming not just as mere production of food in the city but as production of the city; a way to grow the city as a living environment. With the revenue generated from the sale of produce to local restaurants, retailers and individual consumers, our pilot project in Oakland, CA will sustain the operation of a STEM education laboratory, after-school co-learning space and multi-purpose community gathering space. By using high quality inputs and cutting-edge climate management systems, Farm-X can deliver vegetables of unrivaled taste, freshness and nutritional value to restaurants and retailers year-round with limited price volatility. Farm-X intends to prove an ambitious two-fold hypothesis: Vertical farms are not only both economically and environmentally sustainable but they are also "urban devices" capable of reactivating blighted urban space.
