Fauna species play an important role in ecosystem function with many species acting as keystone species which maintain the system. As such, faunal species require habitat in which to live and function. Vegetation associated with study areas provides such habitat for faunal species providing shelter, nesting and roosting sites, food sources and ecological corridors for movement of fauna. Should vegetation native to an area be reduced or disturbed, a reduction in the number and abundance of fauna species will be noted Construction, mining and/or other works associated with the activities listed by the Environmental Management Act (Act 107 of 1998) can adversely affect fauna habitat and fauna species directly or indirectly. Such habitat disturbances can furthermore be detrimental to the long term survival of fauna species, especially those of conservation significance, according to the extent and nature of the disturbance. Therefore the potential impact on fauna, and their associated habitat, should be minimised when considering project options and a fauna assessment should be undertaken as part of the environmental assessment. Fauna Hounds is a company committed to the assessment of fauna and fauna habitat to provide insight into the possible impacts of, and mitigation measures for, an activity
