The first festival of Monodrama and mime was held in 1973. and was established by group of theatre artists and art activist led by Ljubiša Ružić. Festival enjoyed great support of various theatre workers, public and cultural activists, and had big support of National theatre, and was held on its stage in Zemun, and also had major logistical support of Puppet theatre "Pinocchio". The festival is held each year in the first week of July on the stage of Puppet theatre "Pinocchio", as well as on other locations in Zemun. The three-member jury awards two Golden awards: Golden Necklace "Maja Dimitrijević" for best monodrama and Golden Necklace for best mime. The jury awards the Golden Necklace of the audience "Siniša Dašić" for the most successful participants of the festival. Each year the festival issues catalogue which contains all the information about the competition and support programs, as well as other important information on events related to the festival. During the Festival, the daily printed newsletter is published which contains current service information related to the program of the Festival. The necessary funds for the Festival are given by City Assembly of Zemun, as the founder, Secretary of Culture of the City of Belgrade and the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Serbia. However, a large material aid to the festival is provided by charity. More than 850 performances have applied to participate in the Festival, and out of all selected just one play was canceled due to force majeure. In the festival program we've seen artists from 32 countries, and, of course, from Serbia. The performances were seen by about 26,000 spectators. Festival representatives were in Sweden, Russia, Ukraine, Albania and the Republic of Serbian, as guests of the local festivals or as participants in the competition part of the program.
