Fibromyalgia is a neurological chronic pain condition that affects the muscles, tendons and ligaments, but not the joints. It is a condition that challenges both patients and healthcare professionals. Symptoms are wide ranging and wide spread, including amplified pain and other sensitivities, sleep disturbance, and chronic fatigue. Many symptoms include amplification of senses and sensitivities to foods, medication side-effects, chemicals and the like. As yet there is no cure for Fibromyalgia, but there are tools to help manage the condition and reduce symptoms. The Fibromyalgia Support Network is run wholly by volunteers, all of whom have Fibromyalgia. We have a larger committee than most organisations to ensure that, due to committee members being too ill to attend, we still have enough of the committee to run the organisation. The aims of the Fibromyalgia Support Network include providing support networks and education for people diagnosed with the condition of Fibromyalgia, educating health professionals in the management of symptoms of Fibromyalgia, increasing community awareness of the implications of a diagnosis of Fibromyalgia and continuing with the organisational development of the Fibromyalgia Support Network to ensure the provision of updated research information and associated management strategies for Fibromyalgia. We do this by maintaining a large online presence with a very informative website, Facebook page and closed discussion groups, fundraising and promotions, and regular online newsletters. The Network hosts numerous social coffee catchups throughout the Perth suburbs and in country WA from Geraldton in the north down to Alban and Esperance in the south. Each month we run an educational forum with guest speakers who are experts in their area of knowledge relating to Fibromyalgia.
