The Fine Arts Council is a self-supporting student organization whose mission is to provide an opportunity for artists to display and sell their artwork, and to be available as a resource to University of Iowa Student Artists. Since the 1970's the Fine Arts Council has organized shows that serve as a premier art events within the region's fine art scene. Student employees of all majors and backgrounds are hired each year to take on tasks related to marketing, advertising, logistics, management, and event planning. The Council organizes two art shows each year, The Holiday Thieves' Market in the winter, and the Spring Art Exposé in the spring. These indoor art exhibitions and sales are an Iowa City and Coralville community tradition, historically held at the Iowa Memorial Union. A wide variety of artists showcase their work, ranging from painting, jewelry, photography, and printmaking, to glass, clay, metal, wood, fiber, mixed media, and more. Select featured regional wine and craft beer vendors are hosted during the show at the free tasting to highlight local businesses. The show gathers artists from throughout the Midwest, and beyond, to display and sell their artwork in a welcoming atmosphere that is free and open to the public.
