Bridges Academy is a nonprofit, college preparatory school for students who are "twice-exceptional" – that is, highly gifted yet challenged with learning differences. Twice-exceptionality may include gifted students who have sensory disabilities, Asperger Syndrome, Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, or physical disabilities. Few schools – public or private – have programs in place to educate this unique population and Bridges Academy does just that. In 2011, Bridges launched a robotics program in order to reach those 2e students who are interested in science, technology, engineering, and math, but have difficulty performing in traditional learning environments. The robotics program confronts students with a real-world engineering problem, and then asks them to design, program, build, and operate a robot meant to solve that problem. Once the robot is completed, students enter it into the FIRST Robotics Competition, an event with numerous other schools from across the globe. At its most basic level, Bridges' robotics program gives students hands-on experience with technology. It is a rewarding activity for them in that they increase their fluency with sophisticated computer programs designed for use by professionals. On a deeper level, the program provides lasting and meaningful experiences for students. As a result of their participation, team members gain real-world experience working alongside professional engineers, while developing skills, including project management, programming, teamwork, and innovative thinking, crucial to the 21st century workforce. Bridges' program, Team 4019, is in its fourth year of existence. In its rookie year, Team 4019 won the Judge's Award, given to the team with the most unique and dynamic robot. During the second year, the team won both the Judge's Award and the Industrial Safety Award.
