flockofcats was founded in 2021 by Andy James. The flockofcats mission mission is to help organisations to create environments in which people thrive together. You may well be wondering why I have called this site flockofcats? Let me explain……We are all familiar with the widely used phrase ‘it is like trying to herd cats' – most often used to describe the frustrations of getting a group of people to work together!Herding implies an attempt to command or control a group. The notion of herding cats is founded on the premise of telling people what to do, and how to do it. During the 20th century, we invented management approaches that increased production, efficiency and reliability.We are now in an era of disruption, turbulence - and the pace of change continues to accelerate. How we did things in the 20th century will no longer lead to success.Organisations need individuals to be at their best. They need people to innovate, to provide their insights and ideas, to be creative, enthusiastic and collaborative. And they need people to be able to adapt as the environment around them changes.Traditional, top-down leadership does not create the right conditions for this kind of work.Consider thousands of starlings flying in swooping, beautiful patterns through the sky. This is done instinctively, in response to the environment, with no leader in charge, trying to control them all. This provides a powerful metaphor for thinking about modern organisations.We need to cultivate the conditions that -• help people to be at their very best at work• enable them to achieve great things collectively.• ensures that can adapt to change.
