"Flocks" is a temporary outdoor installation of reflective, abstract, soft sculpture "birds," suspended in large groups from the street lampposts along a one mile stretch of Cambridge Street in Cambridge, MA. The project seeks to emphasize the historic and contemporary socio-economic diversity of Cambridge by celebrating and studying the theme of migration. Inspired by both bird and human migrations, the project seeks to create a memorable experience that celebrates the dream that fuels long and difficult migrations and the coming together of groups to create a new life. Working with students of the Boston Architectural College, "Flocks" has developed educational curricula that focuses on human migration and better understanding of the built environment. This educational outreach is designed for K-8 students of the King Open School and 9th grade students of the Cambridge Rindge and Latin School in Cambridge.Flocks is the winner of an ideas competition for a Public Art Commission in Cambridge sponsored by the Cambridge Arts Council. Additional support comes from the Boston Foundation for Architecture and the Boston Architectural College.
