What can horses tell us about authentic communication? Horses are prey animals – their survival depends on having a strong leader - in nature the leader of the herd is a lead mare. She determines the acceptable behaviour of the herd. Humans are "predator" animals - so how can we get a horse to not only trust us but see us as their leader?Horses pick up so much from our body language – they can even pick up on our heart rate. If we are nervous they can sense that. If we show too much bravado they can pick that up too – and they can also pick up if that is false bravado. Horses are a remarkable mirror for us.Over a day, we work with you to get to the point where the horse will choose, at liberty to "join up" with you just through the strong communication and trust you have formed with that horse. Building confidence and resilience as you go.To achieve this it's about being "as firm as you need to be and as soft as you can be" - you can't physically "make" a horse do anything. They are far too strong, so this is about how you can ask the horse the right questions and reward the right answers.Horses teach us to be "in the moment" – this is how they live. As far as we know, they don't ponder over what happened yesterday and they don't worry about what might happen tomorrow. For us to form a successful connection with the horse, we also have to be totally present. This idea has been used around the world to help people refine their communication styles and understand the effects they have on those around them. This approach has been used to help returned veterans dealing with PTSD. More than once these people have told the story of how doing this work with horses has literally saved them. It's a terrible fact that many of our veterans have lost more of their buddies once they got back home than they did in service. Based on this work we have created a program for a one-day course for executives and teams.
