The norwegian industry agreement on the reduction of food waste, signed by five ministries and the food industry in June, commits actors to establish good and safe solutions for food that is not being sold to go to charity.Through efficient facilitation of the redistribution of surplus food, Food banks Norway ensures the best possible utilization of resources throughout the value chain and contributes to the reduction of food waste throughout the country.There are 4 food banks in Norway. Matsentralen Oslo opened in autumn 2013 and has been a success since day one. In 2016 and 2017, two new food banks have seen the light - one in Tromsø , another one in Bodø and the last one in Bergen. In 2018 we plan on opening 3 more.Food banks Norway is an umbrella organization that coordinates, assists and develops all Food Banks in Norway as well as being a knowledge bank and catalyst for new local initiatives.Furthermore, the association works to develop common systems that facilitate the distribution of surplus food directly from stores to charity organizations . It also negotiates agreements with national players.Food Banks Norway works to raise awareness and visibility of Food Banks and the problem of food waste.The board of Matsentralen Norge included both representatives from the Food Banks and the food industry.
