Food for Greater Elgin is a regional client-choice food market (pantry) providing food assistance to low-income residents in Elgin, South Elgin and East Dundee, Illinois. Our clients have access to nutritious options including meat, dairy, produce and shelf-stable items and can shop during one of our five weekly distribution times. Our client-choice approach is the premier standard in food assistance, offering our clients ownership, dignity and the opportunity to choose foods that match their ethnic, dietary or family needs. Each month, we serve more than 1,200 households with almost 6,000 individuals, half of whom are children.Food for Greater Elgin is aggressively addressing food insecurity in our community with ending hunger as our ultimate goal. As we continue to build strategic, collaborative partnerships we are striving to be the primary resource for food in our region. Despite misconceptions about hunger and poverty, food assistance stabilizes lives. When our clients have the food they need for physical nourishment, they can can address their other basic human needs.Some of those needs can be met through our Community Resource Center where clients can access an array of services and information that helps promote greater self-sufficiency. As a collaborative effort with other organizations and businesses in the community, Food for Greater Elgin provides a holistic approach to food assistance through workshops and services addressing health and wellness, finances, legal services, pet supplies, bill/utility assistance, budgeting and others. Ultimately, food security helps children excel in school, improves productivity in the workplace, keeps seniors healthy and provides ongoing family stability.
