Formerly Known As Magazine was founded in late 2013 by four McGill undergraduate students as a platform to promote and share the work of young creators and artists from around the world, and as a way to engage in conversation with these artists about their work, influences, and experiences as artists. In collaborating with these creators over the course of our growth, we hope to have begun to reexamine, reevaluate and redefine the role of the art magazine for young and influential cultural consumers. Growing exponentially each year, we have seen an expansion in digital and physical reach, we use FKA as a way to create enjoyable discussion about serious work, bringing their work to the attention of an international audience through the magazine itself, exhibitions, and events, but above all to still have fun and remain playful throughout the process. Showcasing work from varied disciplines, we are able to peek into the minds of creators who present their work during a time of shifting perspectives, expectations, and boundaries. We are able to speak to them not in an overly formal setting in which analysis becomes inaccessible to all but those well versed in academic vernacular, but rather as like-minded peers and young, energized consumers of culture and ideas. Formerly Known As Magazine continues to develop deep and important relationships with not only our audience - one that skews towards the 18-25, urban, and culturally minded demographic - but with many of the artists we have worked with in the past. We have developed such relationships that we are able to continue to collaborate with past featured artists into the present, and will continue to do so in the future. As the creators we feature push the boundaries of their disciplines, we hope to push the boundaries of what it means to be an art magazine.
