Forschungszentrum Küste (FZK) is a joint central institution of Leibniz Universität Hannover and Technische Universität Braunschweig in Germany. It is based in Hannover and under its umbrella institutes and research groups of both universities are working together in the topics of Coastal Engineering and Hydrodynamics. In close cooperation with its four partner institutes, FZK improves the co-ordination of coastal research at universities and develops multi-disciplinary national and international co-operation.\\The overall goal of FZK is the scientific investigation of hydrodynamic, morphodynamic and ecological processes at and in front of the coast. The team at FZK describes and forecasts these processes, their interaction as well as their temporal and spatial variation. Based on this understanding, trends concerning potential changes of the natural processes are identified and interpreted so environmental intervention can be predicted regarding the impact in the near and far field. Moreover, scientific results are translated into recommendations which ensure that necessary intervention always accounts for the natural coastal environment. \\The scientific focus at FZK is traditionally coastal based and today covers four main research topics: coastal protection structures, sediment transport, maritime energy, and ecohydraulics.\\FZK is home to the Large Wave Flume (GWK), one of he world's largest wave flumes and an important facility for basic and applied research on Coastal Engineering phenomena. It is equipped with a powerful wave paddle which can generate regular and irregular waves up to 2 m high as well as freak waves. State-of-the-art measurement instruments guarantee high resolution data to investigate a wide range of physical processes in the coastal zone.
