Forward Learning Youth and Young Adults (FLYY) is a Wisconsin-based non-profit organization that specializes in working with at-risk and vulnerable teens (14 to 18 years old) and young adults (18 to 30 years old.) FLYY's unique program design couples three major elements: a wilderness expedition, parent/guardian support, and ongoing community-based aftercare. Many young people served by FLYY are marginalized, overlooked, and not effectively reached by, or able to access existing community resources. FLYY provides an adjunctive setting to address the behavioral, educational and therapeutic needs of youth, while supporting the family system to sustain what is learned. FLYY provides young people an opportunity to experience being a part of something positive that is larger than they are, to give without expecting anything in return, to lend support to others and to build confidence by completing something challenging. We specialize in expeditions and aftercare for teens and young adults. Young people who benefit the most from our program are typically experiencing one or more of the following issues: Academic (including truancy, suspension, or expulsion) Resistance to authority Anxiety Bi-polar Identity Lack of motivation/apathy Various other mental health diagnosis Impulsive behaviors Self-harm Susceptibility to negative peer pressure Poor decision making skills Repeated failures Argumentative/anger management Substance experimentation and/or abuse ADHD/ADD Low self-esteem and self-worth Trouble maintaining healthy relationships Unstable family environments Loss of hope and meaning in their lives Survivors of trauma/abuse Adoption/attachment Legal problems and/or a variety of other high-risk behaviors
