It began in 1996 when a group of citizens, concerned about the growing epidemic of domestic violence, formed a task force to address the problem and provide services. In 2003, our Board of Directors accepted the donated use of a privately owned facility for a shelter. With the support of local churches, businesses, civic groups and individuals, the shelter was renovated and opened as Freedom's Rest in 2004. We are the only shelter in Christian County, serving residents throughout southwest Missouri. We also cooperate with other shelters when the need arises to place victims out of their local area for their safety. Women and children fleeing from a dangerous situation, regardless of home domicile, are welcome at our shelter.
