Freyomi Education Solutions, Inc. is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that works to combat illiteracy through prevention, treatment, and awareness. We work with community organizations to support on-the-ground adult literacy tutoring efforts and we also provide scholarships to teachers pursuing graduate education directly related to literacy. Additionally, we run literacy boot camp programs with at-risk and incarcerated youth and have fundraising events throughout New York City. Come help us empower others through literacy!In the United States alone, 14% of the adult population, or 32 million adults, are illiterate. This figure does not include the 23% of adults (approximately 44 million) who read only at the lowest levels. Around the world, approximately 12% of the adult population is functionally illiterate. This equates to about 775 million people.Adult illiteracy is a worldwide problem that has many negative, widespread effects on society, including government, economics, the environment, crime, and public health.We believe that literacy is not simply the ability to read and write; rather, it is a personally and socially transformative process that gives individuals the agency to be proactive and create change in their communities, as opposed to reacting to the forces of social will. Without basic literacy skills, individuals lose the ability to make well-informed political choices, interact with democratic institutions, and act in a manner that promotes intercultural understanding, respect, and tolerance.
