Non-Profit - Silver Spring, MD, US
Friends in Solidarity is a not for profit organization established in the US to raise awareness of key issues in Sub-Saharan Africa and in particular the situation in South Sudan. It raises funds to support the work of religious priests, brothers and sisters, members of Solidarity with South Sudan, involved in teacher training, training of nurses, midwives, farmers and pastoral agents. Solidarity with South Sudan is a new model of ministry with personnel coming from 19 religious congregations and 20 countries. It was established by leaders of Roman Catholic institutions of men and women in 2006 in response to a request from the Bishops of Sudan. Two institutions are currently supported by Friends in Solidarity: The Solidarity Teacher Training College at Yambio provides both inservice and pre-service programs for teachers and those aspiring to become teachers from across the country. There is a need for 26,000 certified teachers in South Sudan where the literacy rate is the one of the lowest in the world. The Catholic Health Training Institute at Wau has three year certificate programs for training registered nurses and midwives. Currently 110 students are enrolled. Nearly half of all certified RNs in the country have been trained at the CHTI.Solidarity also runs an agricultural training project at Riimenze and trains diocesan pastoral teams in ten dioceses.
