Friends of the Shelter is an all-volunteer, 501c3 non-profit group established to coordinate the fundraising activities that directly benefit the dogs of the Franklin County Dog Shelter and Adoption Center. The Franklin County Dog Shelter receives annual funding allotted from the county budget. In addition, the shelter generates funds through the sale of licenses and redemption fees. However, these 2 sources of funding are not adequate to address medical care for the dogs who arrive at the shelter in need of more than just basic services. From this, the idea for Friends of the Shelter was born. The primary expense for Friends of the Shelter is medical/surgical/ recuperative infirmary care for dogs who come to the shelter sick, injured or neglected or become sick or injured while in our care. Annually, this care costs $150,000+. Friends of the Shelter funds the care for dogs that need surgery or have illnesses. Examples of the types of care we provide include surgery and care for dogs with orthopedic injuries, that have been hit by a car, that have cardiac or neurologic issues and those with illnesses like parvovirus, heartworm disease, and diabetes. Friends of the Shelter is an all-volunteer group composed of generous individuals in our community who donate their expertise to the day-to-day operations of the organization, as well as planning and facilitating fundraising events, marketing and public relations projects, and accounting and legal guidance. As an all-volunteer group, the organization is able to keep overhead very low, allowing the majority of donations to help our needy shelter dogs.Friends of the Shelter is a 501c3 non-profit group. Donations are tax deductible.
