Capital Markets - Oakland, California, United States
What we do:Vast inequities exist on both sides of the US investing industry:• The people with money to invest – 96% of whom are small, "retail" investors -- are excluded from most private markets since they are not "accredited" (wealthy) investors. • On the other side, only 2% of current investment goes to fund managers who are women and 1% goes to people of color. Why we do it:• To redirect capital toward racial & gender equity: Founders who are female get less than 2% of startup financing; Founders who are people of color get less than 1%.• To unlock the private market for retail investors: 96% of the trillions of dollars in capital in the US sits with small, "retail" investors who have been locked out of private markets because of legal barriers to "unaccredited" (non-wealthy) investors. We "invert the pyramid" to aim at the 96% of investors at the base, instead of current practice to only tap those few at the top.• To go beyond crowdfunding, since most crowdfunding campaigns fail despite being expensive and time-consuming. Plus, the "stock picking" required makes it NOT a solution for non-professional, retail investors (since you need 30+ investments to create a full portfolio, according to recent research from the Angel Capital Association.)The positive impact we will have:We will improve the lives of communities affected by racial and gender inequities by:• Identifying fund managers who are closest to their own communities of women and people of color.• Ensuring that capital is not just "funding local businesses", but rather, invested in local businesses that "regenerate" their communities and operate with diversity and inclusion. How our model works:Our criteria: We identify funds with portfolios of companies that:• Ensure that all companies in their portfolio are regenerative • Apply "JEDI' principles [justice, equity, diversity & inclusion]• Have a need for short-term debt financing while showing the capacity to repay
