Mental Health Care - , ,
Romão de Sousa Foundation was created by José and Maria Romão de Sousa with the aim of helping people with severe mental health problems. It is set on a 20 acre property in the province of Alentejo, in Central Portugal, about 100 miles east of Lisbon. The Foundation was registered in Portugal as a "IPSS - Instituição Privada de Solidariedade Social" (Private Institution of Social Solidarity) and was recognized by the Ministry of Health and Social Security as "Pessoa Colectiva de Utilidade Pública" (Institution for Public Benefit) on July 2010. The Statutory Bodies are a Board of Directors (3), a Board of Trustees (5) and a Fiscal Council (3). "Casa de Alba" was the chosen name for its first Therapeutic Community. Incidentally, in Portuguese "Alba" means "dawn" and also "white". A mission statement was developed: - Help people suffering from severe mental health problems and in particular schizophrenias to improve their quality of life, autonomy and social integration; - Create and manage a therapeutic community where a range of psychological therapies and psychosocial activities are implemented and results monitored; - Cooperate with similar institutions in Portugal and abroad sharing experiences and contributing for the research and development of new therapies and intervention models. The therapeutic program operates within a relational-integrative framework, from where a number of interventions flourish: group psychotherapy, multifamily therapy, psychiatric consultation and pharmacological treatment, sport activities, expressive therapies and a number of outdoor activities, such as horse ridding, horticultural therapy and walking activities. Casa de Alba is also committed with research and is currently enrolled in a number of national and international research protocols.
