Imagine how your life would change if you couldn't easily move the arm and hand on one side of your body. For more than 2 million Americans, this scenario requires no imagination: it's their reality, brought on by a stroke, brain injury, multiple sclerosis, cerebral palsy, or some other neurological condition. Physical therapy can help these people, but professional treatments are often time-limited and expensive, and they frequently lack sufficient intensity to create lasting change.Games That Moves You creates therapy in motion for improved upper extremity mobility. With professional constraint-induced (CI) therapy treatments prohibitively expensive and inaccessible to most, a team at Ohio State University created Recovery Rapids, a home-based computer game where players control an onscreen kayaker navigating through river obstacles by performing movements of their weaker arm and hand. Recovery Rapids uses a Microsoft Kinect sensor to capture body movements from users and replicate them on screen, allowing them to carry out activities in the game such as paddling, navigating around barriers, capturing supplies, solving puzzles, and picking objects from the river. The overall quality of life of people surviving life-impacting incidence of stroke, traumatic brain injury, multiple sclerosis, and other conditions resulting in motor disability can be improved through gamified therapy. Gamified therapy, along with the newer rehabilitation strategy of Constraint-Induced (CI) results in substantial recovery of function in weakened upper extremities, even years post-injury. Despite extensive research, with positive outcomes in clinical trials, CI therapy is available to less than one percent of patients with weakened extremities. Virtual reality-based physical therapy can help to optimize and expedite the recovery process. Recovery Rapids is clinically-validated gamified therapy, developed by Games That Move You.
