We began Garage Wine Co. with the idea of making wine on a small scale, a personal scale, by hand with the family. It was (and still is!) physical work, and a therapeutic complement to the hustle and bustle of the new millenium. Few in Chile, back then, knew what a “garagiste” was, nor were they familiar with the gringo tradition of celebrated companies having began “in the garage”. Viñas in Chile were large affairs, named after saints and owned by clubby families with long names full of double rr’s who presided over a rather closed circle. So patented the name Garage Wine Company anyway and went to work, quietly but surely, content to make wine barrel by barrel and selling it amongst the few who sought us out. After nine vintages in the “garage” itself we set up shop next to our favourite fruit, high in the Maipo Valley. Today, as always, G.W.Co. wines are made by hand in small lots using open-top fermenters, caps are punched down by hand and pressing is strictly manual. All wines are bottled in recycled glass. Today we have grown to about thirty barrels per harvest based upon interest abroad generated through our participation in MOVI - Movement of Independent Vintners. We shall continue to grow slowly as more of our small producers of Carignan wines become available.
