Garawana Creative is an Indigenous owned and operated Landscape Design business based in Victoria. Established in 2014 as a sole trader it is managed by owner Charles Solomon; who is professionally trained in Conservation Land Management and has extensive working knowledge of Indigenous culture, landscape and flora. Charles' Indigenous heritage stems from South East Queensland – Gubbi Gubbi (his Grandmother) and Cooma, New South Wales – Monaro (his Grandfather). Charles was born and like his father grew up in Orbost near Lakes Entrance, Victoria (part of the Gippsland Lakes region), where he learnt about culture from his grandfather. ‘Garawana' means ‘to dream' in the Ngarigo language of the Monaro people.Charles' extensive skills and knowledge in native botanics, land management, conservation and eco systems are supported by Indigenous cultural knowledge. His previous roles at the University of Melbourne and the Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne (RBG) as Aboriginal Programs Officer. In 2014 he took on a number of contracts globally, including in the UK and France. Charles was an integral contributor to launch of The Essence of Australia garden project featured at London's 2014 RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show (the world's largest flower show). (The project was awarded a Gold Medal and won the prestigious Best in Show title). The award-winning garden incorporated Indigenous cultural elements into the design, plant choice and underlying philosophy.
