Gateway Furniture is a project of Gateway church Swindon and provides furniture, domestic appliances, clothing, baby equipment and items like pots, pans, crockery, glass to people in need via a referral system.We have furnished thousands of homes since we started in 2009, averted hundreds of tonnes from landfill and we now help around 500 households a year and serve over 60 local agencies. .. During that time we've also built some allotments for people in Penhill to use, done house removals and have two houses that we use for supported housing or emergency accommodation.We are Christ centred and people focused and increasingly we want to bring hope for tomorrow to people. We have concentrating on practical provision but now beginning to reate community through bringing people together. At the moment we have a toddler group on a Thursday morning, workshops in the holidays for children of all ages, a group to help those for who language is a barrier and an arts and craft group. We have a café in town for people to congregate and the church have a number of connect groups and community groups where people can get connected. We also want to help people back into work. Last year over 140 volunteers came through our doors with many moving on to find work, developing skills and receiving training.Increasing we want to become more and more sustainable and don't want have to rely solely on grants so to keep everything going we have a retail shop in town called the Gate which is open 9.30 - 4.30 Monday - Saturday.. This sells vintage and retro furniture, toys, home accessories and even has a bridal wear department to help make that special day more affordable
