Civic & Social Organization - Mortsel, Vlaams Gewest, Belgium
Gebermte is a community initiative that has been committed since 2015 to an ecological vision of the future for the roadsides and to care for the roadsides, their communities (plants, animals, insects and people) and the wider living environment. We bring residents of Mortsel, Wilrijk and the surrounding area together, enter into partnerships with associations, residents and authorities and look for ways to interweave culture, nature and the roadsides. What lives, lives and comes together on, around and in the roadsides and from which the roadsides are built wants to investigate roadsides in order to learn from the roadsides and to strengthen the communities of the roadsides and the roadsides. We want to achieve that roadsides and their communities are recognized and treated as ecological tissues that make valuable connections at the local and supralocal level. Central to our work is the involvement of art and culture in the formation of a vision for the future of the roadsides. In order to achieve our goal, we are also working towards more small-scale cultural events that make the roadsides visible and experienceable for the public in new ways. We do not do this based on the conviction that art and culture in themselves are a blessing. Artistic involvement in creating stories (or visions) about the roadsides and translating these stories into artistic forms can add new meanings to the roadsides and help us to see, experience and approach the roadsides in new ways. . The involvement of artists and makers in what happens to the world around them and what they would like to see changed is also important, as is the recruiting and connecting dynamics that art and culture can bring about.
