The Human Genome is made up of 23 pairs of chromosomes which is made up of 3 billion base pairs of DNA. There are an estimated 20,000-25,000 human protein-coding genes. Mutations in these protein-coding genes can lead to genetic disorders. Inherited genetic mutations are known to play a major role in about 5-10 percent of all cancers. BUT, that's only part of the story. DNA modifications that do not change the DNA sequence can also affect gene activity. Chemical compounds that are added to single genes can regulate their activity; these modifications are known as epigenetic changes. The Epigenome comprises all of the chemical compounds that have been added to the entirety of one's DNA (Genome) as a way to regulate the activity or expression (Transcriptome) of all the genes within the genome. Genomix is a one-stop-shop for Genome, Epigenome and Transcriptome sequencing and analysis.
