GenY Designs, founded by Vanderbilt engineers Brian Akselrad and Chris Butsch, is a design firm aimed at helping the younger generation produce, develop and patent their product ideas. The firm's first product developed by the founders is the Piezoelectric Shoe, a device to be built into all types of footwear that harnesses the kinetic energy of a footstep, collects it and converts it into a usable 5V charge, allowing the user to fully charge their iPad, iPhone, or Android after roughly 5 miles of walking. The firm is currently consulting several teams of Vanderbilt students free of charge and is hoping to partner with the school's emerging entrepreneurial outreach program.
