When you hear the word "geode" you may think of a pretty plain looking rock, that when broken open, contains beautiful crystals. Some have swirly concentric banding, others have quartz crystals and various types of chalcedony deposits. Most would describe them as beautiful in one way or another. These deceptively plain looking rocks could have been discarded as useless or uninteresting, but one day a someone discovered its inner beauty. Whether this discovery came as a happy coincidence or purposeful geologic exploration, the tales of geodes' value spread and they became desirable and cherished to the average person.GEODES is an organization that strives to educate the general public about the disability experience in society, while enabling the cooperation within the community of people who have disabilities and those who are able-bodied. While the beauty and harmony of this cooperation is often unseen or taken for granted and undervalued, GEODES enables people to break open stereotypes and misconceptions to expose the reality of the social aspects of having a disability. The mission of GEODES is to offer education to the public on the social aspects of disability in order to remove social barriers that inhibit the full inclusion of people with disabilities in society; as well as promoting the cooperation between the able-bodied and disabled parts of the community. These goals are realized through guest lecturing in classrooms, public speaking, and hosting seminars and workshops for students and professionals alike.
