Civic & Social Organization - Pickering, Ontario, Canada
Get Up and Go Green is a grassroots non-profit initiative working to solve two of today's biggest challenges: poverty and sustainability. The programs being developed will help build strong communities where at-risk and low-income people can live, and support one another and members of their community with an emphasis on People, Planet, Community and Quality of Life. This will be done through two main channels:• First, we'll build a community of support and empowerment through an online marketplace (phaseoutpoverty.com) where people in the community can engage their time & skills for items like food, clothing, supplies, shelter and more. It'll support students, low-income families, and homeless persons to establish economic stability towards a better quality of life, and in doing so, impact and support the community and organisations around them in positive and productive ways. • Second, we will build eco-urban co-operative housing using shipping containers as a base, and with emphasis on self-reliance, community support, and redefine a higher standard of living. A pilot project is currently being designed and will focus on homeless youth, pregnant and single mothers, local and international students (women 16-29), and with special consideration of persons with physical and cognitive disabilities. The future of our communities begins with symbiosis. A relationship among people and organisations with the economic means to help those willing to rise above poverty. With this support system in place, we'll design, shape, and redevelop existing properties with sustainability at its core, building community-based housing where people Live, Work, and Play. Our mission is to achieve Community Sustainability by breaking down economic barriers, strengthening community ties, and ensuring the prosperity of each person (in all stages of life), and in doing so, supporting the community as a whole.
