Gifts for the Homeless Inc is a Non-for-profit organization that collects lightly use clothing and unopened hygiene items to create survival kits for homeless shelters across the downtown core of Toronto. The survival kits have the basic necessities a person may need to survive on the streets. The kits include: hat, gloves, scarf, sweater/t-shirt, socks, a hygiene kit which include a toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant, a bar of soap, hygiene wipes, women get pads/tampons. The donations vary as well so the bags are unique. Over 500 survival kits have been created and delivered to the homeless population. The shelters we donate to are The Salvation Army - Florence Booth House, Yonge Street Mission, Eva's Place, Mary's Place, Central Neighborhood Group, All Saints, and the Redeemer Drop in Program. We are trying to help shelters provide the necessary items people need on the streets to transition from streets to shelters. Also shelter sometimes lack items and people not always get the items they need. With the survival kits, we are trying to achieve that each individual that walks in to the shelter will receive a kit. Currently we are only open throughout the winter months and the bags get donated to be handed out on Christmas Day.
