Capoeira, a traditional Afro-Brazilian practice, is used within the field of child protection as a social technology and an innovative approach with proven results. Since 2008, the Gingando pela Paz project has been operating in Haiti through Viva Rio and has benefited + 1 500 children. It has also provided leadership training for youth, most of whom continue to be actively involved in peacebuilding work to this day. Capoeira also proved to be an impactful tool as part of psycho-social response to the 2010 earthquake. From 2014 to 2018, Gingando pela Paz provided technical and pedagogical support to the Capoeira pour la Paix program implemented by UNICEF in Goma (North Kivu). Using the specific methodology of Social Capoeira, the project helped reintegrate demobilized children from armed groups and children in situations of vulnerability, such as unaccompanied children and orphans, victims of sexual violence and HIV-AIDS carriers. The project benefitted over 9 600 children and adolescents (1 700 girls). In Heal Africa, a hospital where the program is implemented, girls make up more than 50% of participants. Based in values such as respect, cooperation and solidarity, Social Capoeira offers a safe space for boys and girls to build capacitates in relation to social cohesion, human rights, gender equality and life skills to inspire them to become agents of change in their communities. The project offers an array of activities complementary to Capoeira to learn constructive and non-violent communication, reinforce leadership skills and take part in exchanges to experience different cultures. The project contributes to reducing traumas caused by violence and accompanies children and youth in building a new identity and reconstructing social bonds of friendship and community.
