In 2010, two ambitious girls set out to diversify the land of computer science and destroy gender divides in the field for good. After a year of throwing around ideas, building a business plan and fundraising, Girl Code was born: a feminist agenda, after school initiative built to mentor and empower girls ages 12-17 by teaching them basic coding skills to support their future endeavors and instill confidence in academia. In 2014, the California based movement split into two branches located out of Davis and San Francisco focusing on private tutoring and open studios for participating students.
