Girls Rock Detroit is a community organization dedicated to fostering girls' creative expression, positive self-esteem, and community awareness through rock music education and performance.By encouraging creativity, confidence, and collaboration in a supportive environment, we strive to empower young women to challenge preconceived notions of what they can do and what they can become, and to become engaged members of our communities.We believe it is crucial that girls have access to equipment and instruction regardless of their socio-economic background, race or ethnicity.Girls Rock Detroit offers a week long summer camp program. Through the course of the week, the campers, many of whom have no formal musical experience, will receive instrument instruction, form bands and write their own original songs.In addition to song-writing, the girls will attend workshops focusing on musicianship, self-esteem, and empowerment skills, and be involved with an interactive performance by a local female artist or band at the end of each day. The camp week concludes with a concert showcasing the original music of each of the bands Girls Rock Detroit summer camp is a safe, positive space filled with supportive role-models. Campers are mentored in an empowering all-female environment filled with seasoned musicians, educators and activists.
