Girls Teaching Girls is an organization through NAU run by college students. We currently have 6 women actively running projects on and off campus. The NAU students come with many different skills, interests, and majors. The majors that we currently cover include environmental science, geology, biochemistry, chemistry, health, Spanish, psychology, education, etc. Our mission statement is: Girls Teaching Girls is a collaborative mentorship program between Killip Elementary School and members of the NAU student organization Girls Teaching Girls (along with other participating on-campus STEAM groups if the schedule allows). The organization provides lessons, hands-on activities, and tutoring to promote leadership, community activism, empowerment, and Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math (STEAM) related skills with the goal of fostering female leaders of the future.Over the past three years, we have established a successful after school program at Killip Elementary. We provide hands-on STEAM instruction two days a week for an hour each day. We have worked closely with Killip teachers, administration, and the Americorp Vista program to ensure that the girls feel empowered to have fun and learn. We are hoping to be mentors and instructors that can bring unique projects to young girls who might not otherwise speak up or participate. We want to show them that women can be strong and inspirational no matter their interests, gender, or demography. The projects are goal-oriented, hands-on, and produce some kind of deliverable in the end that the girls can present and be proud of.
